Scott Johnson Bursary

An Update
21 Oct 2014

Hello,

I wanted to let you all know what has happened with Scott’s Bursary.

We never wanted to attract collections as I fear that people never get to know the detail of where their money goes, but so many people have shared our grief and been so kind. We received donations totalling over £6500. Radiohead fans contributed over £3500, there is an ongoing large donation from Keane and many drumming students have donated pocket money.

We set up a small group of myself, Mr Paul Munday and Mr Mat Dabbs and decided that we would supply electronic drum kits. The idea was that kids could take the kits home and practice without the noise.

The whole project was supported by Electro Music, a retailer in Doncaster where Scott worked for many years before venturing out on the road. Two teachers at the shop, Ian West and Errol Rollins, took the first kits and made great use of them, putting them out with students for 3 monthly periods to help with practice where there is no kit at home.

We have had fantastic support from Yamaha and to date we have purchased 14 kits and distributed to schools and teachers, with enough money left over for 2 more kits.

It is difficult to measure how many students have benefited, but it
is a great memorial to Scott; he would be so pleased. Life will never
be the same for us but the love shared with us will also not be
forgotten.

Love to everyone

Ken and Sue Johnson

Drum kit update
12 Jan 2013

Thank you again all who very kindly donated to Scott’s fund.
As mentioned previously several of Scott’s drum tutor friends were able to set up pupils with the drum kits before Christmas which as you can imagine made it the best Christmas ever for these lucky recipients

I will keep you informed how these pupils progress, in the meantime feel free to checkout the tutors sites who are ‘on board’ so far, for more information on their pupils

Scotts Yamaha Drum kit update
11 Jan 2013

Thank you all once again for your very kind donations.

Im very pleased to inform you that your donations have been put to really good use and with the support from Scott’s friends at Yamaha Music we were able to purchase 9 Yamaha DTX electronic drum kits at a sponsored and heavily discounted cost price.

There are young musicians out there possessing some of Scott’s values and qualities and showing a similar enthusiasm, passion, determination and a desire to fulfill potential and be creative.
Unfortunately some perhaps cannot afford a drum kit and/or have noise issues or the room to set up a kit at home and consequently they cannot practice and improve.
Therefore we thought an electronic kit would work even in a box bedroom and help these budding drummers.

We discussed the idea with several drum tutor friends of Scotts and they have agreements drafted up to loan these drum kits for a period of time with these pupils, so if they stop playing or lose enthusiasm it is returned to be passed onto the next deserving pupil.

We will keep you informed as to how these pupils are progressing.

THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN

Dear Friends of Scott,
We have been wanting to inform you of some plans for the funds that you have kindly donated. We needed to allow some time to pass and frankly I and Sue have been very busy and very sad of course as we know that you feel the same loss. The intention was to be monies in lieu of flowers and the Church gave all of the collection at the funeral, some £800 that was boosted up quickly to £1200 prior to Radiohead and the fans started the inclusion in the website which has taken the fund to £3557.79 as at the 30th October 2012. Julie has helped us in setting this paypal account and she, myself Paul Munday and Matt Dabbs have equal access and control. we did expect this to be the peak of the fund in time scale a good amount of this money came from two site previously set up by Radiohead fans in the USA but it will continue as Keane have kindly donated royalties from the sale of their new 4 track EP on vinyl “Upstairs at United” you can order at www.keanemusic.com. So there will be continuity over a period of time but will remain quite modest we are pleased to say as it is all about a gesture and memorial not to change the world even though the world has changed significantly of course for us. We will never forget him of course but we do not wish Scott’s friends to dwell on the tragedy of the event but start to move forward with the same smile on life that he always had and would want us to do the same.
Paul and Matt will manage the process and I feel that comments they made to be particularly significant and we find so appropriate:

“ We had wanted to give the fund time to settle but we are also aware that out of respect to all Scott’s friends who kindly donated and fans of the band who paid into the bands website, that we really do need to let them know out of courtesy the plans to move forward with their kind donations.
There are kids out there possessing some of Scott’s values and qualities and showing a similar enthusiasm, passion, determination and effort for their chosen instrument and a desire to fulfil potential
and be creative.”

There is now enough monies to have a significant impact on young musicians in our area. A major music manufacturer will support the project and we will go ahead immediately taking advice and being involved with other local music services. We can now equip all who have a genuine interest where we recognise this support will create opportunity. We will buy this week maybe 8/9 electronic drum kits and involve local teachers who do not even know yet that they will receive a kit to use with enthusiastic students to push them on and encourage them. We thank Paul and Matt for their support and know that there are many others who are willing to be involved but hope that all will see in the coming weeks what has been done.
There will be memorials purely to celebrate Scott’s life which we will inform you off and frankly if you wish to feel closer to Scott then open yourself a Peroni and give him some thought of the nice times you had with him. I am sure many of you have already done so many times. We would like to thank you all and Radiohead and the crew. Your kindness has helped us so much to look at the life of Scott and realise the impact he has had on so many. We will endeavour to keep you informed of how we are dealing with life without Scott and the different things that will keep you all close in our hearts as well.

Our thanks, love and peace to you all.

Dear friends of Scott,

It has been heart-warming to receive the kind wishes from you all.

We have had many requests for donations in place of flowers and have set up an account that will be the Scott Johnson Bursary for Young Musicians. This will be managed by his friends locally as a fund primarily in Rotherham Schools.

It was not our intention to create this nor wish his friends to spend money that none of us can afford in these difficult times. We hoped that it would be modest but already some companies and teachers want to offer products and services that will benefit these musicians.

Frankly we cannot equate to the financial aspects but if it helps anyone to contribute in this way the account is established to ensure that no other fund is created in error. It may take a while, but we will keep you informed on how the money is spent in due course.

Thank you all,

Ken and Sue Johnson
